Reading for my mental health and what I read in November

The last couple of months I have been in a little bit of a reading slump.  I hit my target of 60 books to read on Good Reads and then I just found myself not reading as much.

The reading slump has also coincided with my mental health not being at its best.  I have found myself getting lower and lower and thus the pages being read has got fewer.  I think a lot of it has to do with my concentration.  When I'm like this, I find my mind wandering and I Have a short attention span.  I get impatient so reading long books becomes abit of a chore.  I find , instead of reading , I prefer to just watch television or movies.  It is my way of unwinding.

However,  I love to read and I know reading is good for me, so even though I may not read loads I still pursue, knowing that at anytime, I will start to feel better again.  Reading is good for my mental health.

Thus, November hasn't been a particularly good reading month but I have read probably my favourite book of the year which has gotten me out of this slump.
"
The book in question is The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman.  This story is very loosely
based on the real life story of Rachel Monsanto Pomie Petit Pizzarro who was the mother of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissaro.

This book was just so beautiful to read.  Set in the Caribbean and Paris, the writing exquisitely evoked the world in which Rachel and her family lived.  It was a compelling read and I absolutely adored it and will be reading Alice Hoffmans back catalog of books.  I hope they are just as good.

I also read Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks, which is a collection of short stories.  A good read.

Wishing you good reading
Love Lesley

Quick Catch Up

Hi All I've been absence from this blog for a while as unfortunately my beloved hubby has been diagnosed with cancer.  We have caught it early and the prognosis is very good and positive.  It has been a strange year all round and the last couple of months have been more stressful and worrying to say the least. Things are now on the up and thus I feel it is time I get back into updating this little blog of mine, and this little catch up is to say I am coming back.  I am planning more regular content, showcasing my crafty endeavours, what I'm reading and life in general I am also pondering a better and more productive blog schedule for 2021. Watch this space. With love and wishing you a good week Lesley xx

Eating for England by Nigel Slater

Any one who knows me knows I adore Nigel Slater.  He is pure comfort and joy.  I absolutely love his writing and I was surprised that I wasn't aware of this little gem of a book before.  (It was published in 2007). As stated from the book, Eating for England is Nigel Slater's personal portrait of the British and their food.  A celebration of the glories, humour, eccentricities and embarrassments that make up that extraordinary thing that is the British table. This a collection of mini essays celebrating such delights as Faggots and Gravy, Murray Mints, Oxo Cubes, Fruit and Nut, Frys Five Centres, Boiled Brussels Sprouts , Quality Street, Colmans Mustard and Sarsons Vinegar to name but a few. This book is nostalgic, funny, and is a delight to read.  As usual when I read anything by Nigel, I hear his voice in my head, as if he is personally reading it to me. I loved this and gave it 5 stars. Happy reading Love Lesley xx
