August wrap up

August has gone by in the blink of an eye.  I cannot believe that we are two thirds through with 2019.
I have had a fairly good reading month where I read 10 books.  However, most of these were small children's book.

The books read in August were as follows:

The Lost Narwhal by Tori McGee - 4 stars
ABC: Alphabet Animals at Bedtime by Aaron Adams - 4 stars
A Tiger like Me by Michael Engler  - 4 stars
Sun, Moon and Stars by Stephanie Turnbull - 3 Stars
The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman - 5 stars
Rebel Cats! Brave Tales of Feisty Felines by Kimberlie Hamilton -5 stars
The Night Watch by Sarah Waters -5 stars
A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon - 3 Stars
The Cats in the Hat by Dr Suess - 5 stars
Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Suess - 5 Stars.

Highlights were:

I was extremely surprised how much I enjoyed The Book of Dust which is  the first part of a new series Philip Pullman has written concerning Lyra of the Dark Materials series.
I will be picking up the rest of the series in the coming year and I am looking forward to the new TV series due out this Autumn.

The Night Watch was my first Sarah Waters book and I loved it.  Her writing of characters is beautiful and the idea of going backwards with the storyline is a new concept to me, but one that I enjoyed.  I am definitely going to be reading more of her back catalog soon.

I bought Rebel Cats for a friend of mine and very carefully and cheekily read it before giving it to her for her birthday.  This is a beautifully illustrated book with fun stories and facts of my beloved feline friends.  Such a lovely book and my friend was delighted.

I haven't read any Dr Seuss in years, so I thought I would read the two I most remember from my childhood.  The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham are classics, and they did not disappoint.  Such a beloved series of children's books and ones I will return to again and again.

Wishing you all happy reading

Love Lesley

Quick Catch Up

Hi All I've been absence from this blog for a while as unfortunately my beloved hubby has been diagnosed with cancer.  We have caught it early and the prognosis is very good and positive.  It has been a strange year all round and the last couple of months have been more stressful and worrying to say the least. Things are now on the up and thus I feel it is time I get back into updating this little blog of mine, and this little catch up is to say I am coming back.  I am planning more regular content, showcasing my crafty endeavours, what I'm reading and life in general I am also pondering a better and more productive blog schedule for 2021. Watch this space. With love and wishing you a good week Lesley xx

Eating for England by Nigel Slater

Any one who knows me knows I adore Nigel Slater.  He is pure comfort and joy.  I absolutely love his writing and I was surprised that I wasn't aware of this little gem of a book before.  (It was published in 2007). As stated from the book, Eating for England is Nigel Slater's personal portrait of the British and their food.  A celebration of the glories, humour, eccentricities and embarrassments that make up that extraordinary thing that is the British table. This a collection of mini essays celebrating such delights as Faggots and Gravy, Murray Mints, Oxo Cubes, Fruit and Nut, Frys Five Centres, Boiled Brussels Sprouts , Quality Street, Colmans Mustard and Sarsons Vinegar to name but a few. This book is nostalgic, funny, and is a delight to read.  As usual when I read anything by Nigel, I hear his voice in my head, as if he is personally reading it to me. I loved this and gave it 5 stars. Happy reading Love Lesley xx
